The US Department of Justice is seeking to compel Google to sell its Chrome browser. This follows an August ruling in which the department concluded that Google is maintaining an illegal monopoly, notably by prioritizing its search engine within Chrome.
Chrome, which was created by Google, is the most widely used internet browser, with roughly two-thirds of global users. The browser is optimized for seamless integration with Google’s suite of services.
Additionally, Chrome collects data sent to Google, allowing the company to enhance its products and services.
The Department of Justice argues that Chrome’s dominance strengthens Google’s monopolistic position, which is why they are pushing for its sale through the courts.
According to the Department, selling Chrome could create new opportunities for competitors in the search engine and AI markets. However, Google has criticized the Department’s stance, calling it a “radical course.”
In August, a US court ruled that Google violated antitrust laws by using substantial investments to secure its status as the default search engine. The company also holds a dominant position in online advertising.
